5 common new year resolutions you can actually achieve them this year

For many people, the start of a new year presents the perfect time to change habits, quit smoking, lose weight, chart new lives, be courteous, and generally find new roads to happiness and better self. And for the first day, week, or even month – for those on a roll – you may be able to stick to your New Year resolutions. Unfortunately, the momentum rarely lasts long enough for meaningful impact, as something big or insignificant can throw you off track, affecting your drive and motivation.

If those personal or professional goals are really important, you should consider how your old tactics of doing things may be negatively affecting your success rate. Being incredibly busy does not necessarily mean that you’re performing more effectively than when your time and energy is properly managed so you have enough time to rest.

Perhaps tweaking your old-school resolutions, so they seem more meaningful and practical, may give you a better chance of success this year. Here are a few ideas:

Typical Resolution 1: Get a promotion

Your Resolution: Make a move that benefits your long-term career goals

Many people seeking a promotion tend to focus too much on moving up the ladder, often neglecting the importance of establishing a strong foundation on which to build your career. Instead, evaluate your long-term career goals and identify the skills or level of education that is required for that position. In some cases, a lateral move can help to build your experience and strengthen your appeal as an ideal candidate for a promotion.

Typical Resolution 2: Network more

Your new resolution: Establish important links

A good network is invaluable, but attending numerous events to collect as many contacts as you can is not the best way to create a god network. It is more important to establish relationships. So, identify your goals – meeting new people in your industry or establishing a good relationship with someone you met on social media – and keep that goal in mind when attending a networking event.

Typical resolution 3: Spend less time on social media

Your new resolution: Be tactical on social media

Though spending time on social media may feel like a waste of valuable time that should be minimised, being constantly available is actually a vital part of your personal brand. In fact, a recent survey revealed that 35 percent of employers less likely to invite candidates for an interview they can’t “stalk” on the web. Instead of trying to avoid social media completely, try to create a presence that supports your personal brand or is appealing to your potential employers. Try creating meaningful content to show your expertise in your field.

Typical resolution 4: Be more productive

Your New Resolution: Focus on Results

When it comes to business operations, productivity is a trending topic as people try to achieve more with limited resources. However, being busy and being productive are two completely different things. You may need a certain amount of rest to be productive, or using alternative means to get work done. Instead of insisting on doing things in a certain way, try to find the best process to get things done.

Career advancement should be a year-round process, so there’s no need to put so much pressure of progress on a single day, week, or month. Adjust your goals, taking into account your missteps, so you can keep moving toward your dreams.
