Hot off the press from Bing News comes PubHub, a portal for publishers looking to promote their news sites. Newly launched, PubHub allows fairly ubiquitous access (by Windows 10 users through Cortana, by Outlook users through Outlook News Connector, as well as through Bing mobile apps on iOS).
If you’re interested in involving your site and want to know more, the following are the four main criteria Bing says it will be looking for you to meet when it’s deciding on who meets the PubHub grade. You’ll need to be:
In the age of the retweet, and of identical content regurgitated ad infinitum through multiple sources, first-hand reporting, and the use of original sources and perspectives will be vital. A unique point of view, well-expressed and well-supported, will definitely capture Big News’ attention.
Your site’s news copy will need to be relevant to the user demographic, with immediate reporting and coverage of current events and breaking news stories. Anything unrelated to news and current affairs reporting, such as profiles, promotions and recruitment advertising, simply won’t cut the mustard. To meet the newsworthiness criterion, all copy will need to involve reporting and analysis; direct data (stock market and weather stats) will let you down.
As with all good reporting, verification of all sources will be vital, with all content attributed, so that it can be trusted as legitimate and factual. With a significant readership, any discrepancies or inaccuracies in reporting will be found out, so authoritative copy is a prerequisite.
Accuracy, not only of content, but also of style, is vital. Accurate grammar and spelling, and well-structured, concise copy are the basic tools which allow for good, clear reporting. Advertising, if applicable, needs to be unobtrusive and in no way should it interfere with the reader experience or undermine reporting.
So if you’re interested and feel you meet the standard required, go ahead and submit. If you do meet the grade, then all you’ll need to do is verify your site using Bing Webmaster Tools.
