google flights introduces holiday searches by travel interest

Flight

For the seasoned traveller who struggles to think of somewhere they haven’t already been, as much as for the travel novice unsure of where to start looking, Google Flights has introduced new ‘travel interest’ search features. Hunting for holiday escapes, you can now apply filters for travel searches; these focus on your particular hobbies and interests, and suggest a range of destinations.

These new features should allow itchy-footed travellers with flexible leave and open minds to prioritise types of holiday over dates and destinations.

The verdict

More inspired blue sky thinking from the Google team has slotted serendipity into the search process. Potential holidaymakers can choose from a broad selection of interest filters to bring up a geographically diverse list of holiday options, that otherwise they would been unlikely to consider. It’s the search engine equivalent of asking an open, rather than a closed, question this opens a far more interesting dialogue and prompts more interesting and varied answers.

What’s your interest?

Filters currently available to select from include, alphabetically, Adventure, Beaches, Culture, Ecotourism, Food, Honeymoon, Islands, Nature, Outdoor recreation, Shopping, Wildlife, and Winter sports. It is a list which could easily be expanded.

Cleverly, if you do have a specific destination in mind, you can combine the old geographical filters with the exciting new ones to concentrate listings; you can then access, for example, winter sports in California in January, or Ecotourism in Bolivia in March.

Just do it

Trialling the new features opens up a range of unconsidered options. Click on Adventure in March and potential options include bungee jumping in Queenstown, backpacking around the glaciers of El Calafate and Parachuting in Dubai. Ecotourism in April brings up Thenmala in India, Baharona near Santo Domingo de Guerra and, perhaps more surprisingly, Harrington just outside Manchester.

Should I choose the last option, at this point I am presented with a range of flights and accommodation which allow me to create and book my very own bespoke vacation.

The small print

This new feature is, at the time of writing, only available when searching through Google Flights, and does not impact on regular Google searches. Conducting a travel search on Google.com has not been changed.

Take a leap

So if you’re looking for vacation inspiration or simply curious, click Google Flights and enter a few interests; you never know where they might take you.
