is google penguin 4.0 here?

The big question of the day is whether the Google Penguin 4.0 update is already rolling out or just in the test phase?

Historical or hysterical

Looking back to past Penguin updates, most businesses know that big change followed the previous ones and many sites suddenly fell off the radar without warning as their ranking plummeted.

Brace yourself

With that in mind, should we brace ourselves for more sudden change? What will be the effects of this fresh algorithmic update as it attempts to filter out dodgy looking in-bound links to websites? It seems likely, judging on past performance that our organic rankings are going to be affected as the demotions – and promotions – take effect and no doubt, like before, with lightning speed.

Does size matter?

We are still awaiting confirmation as the Google engineers continue testing but what seems certain is that the Penguin 4.0 update will be bigger than the Penguin 3.0 that took everyone by surprise last year. What we need to know is whether it will top the giant size 2013 Penguin 2.0?

Real-time or big time?

Or is it just going to be an ongoing part of the core algorithm update and not a big Penguin update? If so, do we put a questionable ‘yet’ on the end of that sentence? If we read into the message they are saying about a ‘real-time feature’, one can only guess at the implication.

Who knows?

What we really need to know of course is when the release date will be or has Google already started to roll out the latest Penguin update and not told us? Anything is possible in Googleland.

Stranger than fiction

One of the strongest indicators that testing has been going on for months already is the strange fluctuations in ranking that webmasters have observed in the last 6 months.

Some websites that were negatively impacted by the last update have recovered in the last 2 months and zooming up to page 1 overnight. Typically these are sites where little or no SEO or link building is in place and have simply recovered by themselves.

Wait and see…

This sort of thing was seen prior to previous Penguin updates with strange results popping up in search results and other changes occurring in Google Places.

In other words, keep calm and carry on…waiting.
